Ok, so admittedly I’m pretty much a blogging newbie.. I’ve only been at it for like a month or so, and I’m sure this won’t be news for most of you.
A few of my favorite news feeds and blogs:
DPReview: Digital Photography Review and News
National Geographic News: Reporting Your World Daily
Tom’s Hardware: Yes, I’m a dork…
Wired: Again, yes, I’m a fork..
Fox News: World & US News, Politics, etc..
There are several others, and these RSS feeds are a great way to get a quick snippet of information from a particular source without taking the time to read the full article (although there is generally a link to the full article if you wish to read it).
So, how do you keep them all organized? For a while, I would simply add the site to my “Favorites”. Not very handy. Then I used the feature in Mozilla (my preferred web browser) called Live Bookmarks. Better, but still not convenient. Then I heard of something called a Blog Reader, also referred to as an Aggregator. These handy programs are a great way to view and manage your RSS feeds right from your desktop.
There are all kinds of them available- AmphetaDesk, Feedreader, FeedDemon, RSS Reader, and many more.. (I personally prefer FeedDemon).
This way, when you stumble on a site you want to follow up on later, simply click the Orange RSS Feed button
, and select the reader you prefer to use (in my case FeedDemon). Now, whenever you open your Reader, it will automatically update each feed you subscribe to, and you’ll know if any new content has been posted. No more bouncing around from site to site to see if there is any content you wish to read..
