I buried him Saturday evening along one of my favorite stretches of the Rogue River up in Rockford. He was a great companion, and dear friend, and I sure will miss him this fall in the duck blind.

Oh no, I’m so sorry!
If you need anyone to talk to, let me know, we can talk. I can imagine it must be horrible for you.
Many thoughts coming your way!
*manly hugs*

Oh Ryan…. I’m so sorry to hear that.
I know all too well what you’re going through - you don’t want them to be in pain, but you want them with you all the same.
It’s a horrible decision to have to make isn’t it. Everyone always told us that Kaiser (our other GD) was ‘in a better place now that he’s passed over the rainbow bridge’. I know they meant well, but still felt that the best place for him to be was with us. With us…. and healthy. Sadly it wasn’t so.
You’ll be in my thoughts for sure.
Email me if you ever need a shoulder.

That’s a beautiful picture of Remington, Ryan.
It sounds as if it has been a tough time for you, watching Remington go through such pain. And a heartbreaking decision to have to make in the end.
Wishing you the very best.

Well what can i say that hasn’t been said already.
I am sorry you had to go through this.
It sounds like you put him in a lovely resting spot, where he can keep an eye on you in his own way.
Thanks for sharing the lovely photo of Remington.

Ryan, My deepest sympathy on the loss of a dear friend. At least now Remington is not suffering. We had a big black Lab and he was suffering in the end too so I can relate. We had him cremated and scattered his ashes in his favorite places.—Helena

My heart grieves for you….having to have made this decision for three of our beloved pets. Now I love when I dream about them and they are running and playing with not a care!!

Ryan-
I am so sorry to hear about Remington. One of my good friends just lost her beloved dog as well and Iknow how hard it is to lose such a special part of your life.
I’m glad you found such a great resting spot for him. Now he will be with you in your exploration and solitude.

I am so sorry for your loss Ryan. It’s an awful feeling knowing they are suffering and what the right thing to do is yet also wanting to keep them in our lives. it sounds like he is in a very peaceful place though and he will always be with you. I can relate so dearly to your pain and know how hard it is to let go of such a wonderful friend who loves you without words and unconditionally. Dogs are such amazing creatures.
Know you are in my thoughts and if you ever need someone to talk to, you know where to find me.
Your friend,
Katie

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

That’s horrible mate.
No matter how long you have a pet, it’s never long enough.

Ryan, I have been in your spot twice with great hunting dogs. Neither time was very fun. It will get better my friend.

nothing i can say will lessen the pain right now, but my thoughts are with you…

I wish I had words that could ease the pain of losing a beloved pet. I wish words could be so powerful, but they’re all I have right now.
The irony of timing is not lost on me: right around the time you say goodbye to your dog, we welcome a puppy into our home. When I watch our kids and see how their lives are enriched by the arrival of this bundle of fur, I will think of your 13 years with Remington, and how he enriched yours.
May his memory always be a blessing to you.

Ryan, good friend,
Please accept my sympathy and respect. I hadn’t had a chance to see your journal in about a week, until just now; and I am very sorry for your loss.
I hope your friends help support you forward, when it’s especially difficult for you.
Remember you are always welcome to write, and I’ll gratefully reply.

I’m sorry to hear that you lost your buddy. That stuff is real tuff to go through, but I think that photo is a fabulous shot to remember him by! Very nice! By the way I’ve been meaning to make a post for quite awhile, but my computer hasn’t liked your site for awhile… things are going smoothly now, though, yay!

Sorry to here your news - its a hard decision to make
Rach // Mar 23, 2007 at 5:49 pm
I’m very sorry to hear about your loss. But I’m sure Remington is in a better place now.
I lost my dog, Miko last year and I still miss him. His friend Bruno, my other dog (black lab) misses him too.

Oh how sad. It’s so hard losing a pet.
I’m sorry for your loss.

I’m very sorry. I had to do the same with my dog, Smidley, four years ago. I still miss her.
Riley Merrick // Mar 29, 2007 at 6:43 am
I know I’m new here and you don’t know me, but I am so, so sorry for your loss. I have two black Labs, and I don’t know what I would do without them. There is absolutely nothing in this world like the love of a dog.
Ryan // Mar 29, 2007 at 10:48 am
Well welcome Riley, and thank you. No, there aren’t many things in this life as wonderful as the pure, true, unconditional love of a dog. They truly have to be one of the greatest gifts that God ever gave us.
Thank you so much to everyone for stopping by ad taking the time to comment. It truly means so much to me.
UPDATE:
I miss my dog, but know he is out of pain and therefore know that the difficult decision I had to make was the correct one, the unselfish one.
Thanks again to everyone for all the kinds words. I sincerely appreciate it.
