Motion..

Motion

(click on image for larger size)

This photo was made by using a fairly long shutter speed (a little over 15 minutes) and shows the rotation of the earth and the streaks of the stars. Just off-center one of the “dippers” can be seen clearly.. The North Star is down toward the bottom and acts as the axis point.

Thank you for visiting.

Stumble it!

Hey, cool photo. Its very hypnotising.
Not sure i can see the North star though.

Hi Claire, the north star is almost all the way at the bottom, about 1/3 from the bottom right hand corner, its the bright little star that doesn’t have any motion to it, and to which all the other stars appear to rotate around. :)

    Thanks as always for visiting.

That’s neat. I’ve always meant to take some shots like this, but I never seemed to have time. I need more hours in a day. :P

I really like this shot, thanks for sharing it!

Wow, that is really cool. I will have to see if I can do something like that with my camera. Great photo.

This was beautiful. I have never seen that done before. Don’t suppose it can be done with a digital huh?

  • Ryan // Feb 10, 2007 at 12:58 pm

    Hey Sissy,

This WAS in fact done with a digital camera. If your camera is capable of long exposures (some are) then you can set it to “Bulb” mode or Manual mode and do a really long exposure. May take a few tries to get the effect you are after, and you may need to play around with the aperture settings so that not too much light is entering the camera. Also, a sturdy tripod is a must!

Good luck and thank you for stopping by. Let me know if you have any questions.

    Ryan
