As a photographer who often finds himself miles away from an electric outlet, or even my own truck, I wanted a way to transfer my images from my cameras memory cards to free up room so I could to continue shooting. Until recently this meant either carrying around my notebook computer with me in the field (which always made me a bit nervous, since I often head out into some pretty nasty weather), or investing in a portable imageviewer/hard drive option such as the Jobo Giga Vu Pro or something similar. These are quite costly and tend to be a bit bulky.
Then i found a great little device called the iPod Camera Connector. For those of you who have an iPod, or may be looking to get one, this could be a handy addition to your camera bag. Its tiny, light, cheap, and allows the transfer of images from my camera to my iPod.
It does have some limitations. You will of course limited to the free space available on your iPod. I generally keep around 2,700 songs or so, and many videos on my iPod, and still have nearly 16 Gigs free for images when I’m out in the field and find myself in a pinch.. Also, while the iPod will transfer Raw images, it cannot display them. So those of you who shoot in Raw format, you will not be able to actually view the images on the iPod. This, to me is of no consequence since I simply view, edit, discard etc. all images when I can view them full screen on my monitor when I return from shooting.
So, while its not a perfect solution, for less than $30 U.S. dollars, you can turn your iPod into a convenient image storage device, and enjoy your music while out hiking and taking pictures!
Stumble it!

Until I bought my PSP, i never thought of using anything as a backup device for photos. Probably because for my outdoor photography, i’m still using my film cameras, and haven’t gotten around to getting a digital. (read : don’t have patience to save up money)
This is a great tip! I’ll have to keep this in mind if I decide to get an iPod. (yes, I still don’t have one - although I bought one for my wife…now I want one too)
I’m a Nikon guy too.
I can’t live without them. hehe
(oh and thanks for visiting my site too!)
