What a beautiful photo. It has an almost haunted quality to it.
I have also post a photo of barren trees on one of my sites. My photo isn’t quite as artistic as your own though. If you’d like to visit our other sites just follow the links in the post.

What a great photo… very well done! So desolate. Really suits “empty”.

You always have stunning photographs. I want to be as good as you (won’t be this lifetime!). Funniest thing: using Safari to comment was impossible. Everytime I clicked in a text field I was taken back to the default blog page. I had to switch to Firefox.

I agree with meeyauw…I’d love to be as good as you! Stunning again!
Have a super weekend!

Beautiful, the way the clouds shape the top of the tree, very nice.
Happy Hunting!!

Wordless on a Saturday….
If it’s not giving away trade secrets Ryan, how do you achieve some of your effects? Is it at the time of the shot, or afterwards?

I love it, so i stumbled it.
I am definitely getting the Haunted/Lonely vibe, just waiting for that burst of sunshine to blast all the misty stuff away.

Where exactly is this place? It looks kind of creepy. Any special meaning to this tree?

Wow, a perfect depiction of “empty”. Great job, but then you are a photographer, among other things… How’s the rowing going and where are the other three???

Hey everyone!!
Thank you so much to everyone for all the nice comments!
Chris, you can always feel free to ask about any of my photos, I’m always more than happy to share any tips I can about the shot!
This photo was actually the end result of two images (one of the tree, foreground, and background, and a second photo of the sky) sandwiched together in photoshop. I then carefully desaturated it (turned it black and white) using channel;s, and then gave it a slight toning. Finally, I spend a bit of time dodging and burning certain parts of the image for the final look. For example, the long shadow extending from the tree was not there, I burned (darkened) that in. I also dodged (lightened) a bit to enhance the look of the low-hanging fog.
Hope that helps!! :]

A sidenote:
This image is one of a few in my portfolio that take exception to my general rule - Photography happens at the camera and lens, not on a computer after-the-fact..
Most of the images in my portfolio are very lightly touched up in photoshop (such as very light sharpening, color correction, and brightness adjustment). I generally do not rely on using the power of a computer and software (such as Photoshop) to “create” photos. I always try to as accurately as possible give the viewer as close a view as possible to what I saw and felt while taking the image.
With that said, once in a while I do like to have a bit of fun and go crazy with photoshop. What can I say… Too much of a temptation! :]

Cheers Ryan.
Photoshopping (to excess) can be awful, but used in this way, it’s as much an art form as getting the shot in the first place.
I do a bit of cropping and contrast adjustment, but I think I need to play with it a lot more….
The tree especially is awesome-is there any chance of seeing the original photos?
