Weekly Photography Tip - Protecting Gear in Storms

Some of the most exciting and rewarding (and sometimes scary) times I’ve had while out photographing has been out in thunderstorms, heavy snowstorms, and other less than perfect weather conditions. I have even sadly ruined cameras in harsh conditions, as in this image, “Angry Sea”. It’s a great time, but care needs to be taken unless you want to unnecessarily replace photography equipment.

There are many options out there for protecting your camera gear from the elements, ranging from a crude ziplock baggie (you laugh, but my first “rain cover” consisted of a zip lock baggy.. don’t ask..) to elaborate, totally submersible custom camera housings capable of keeping your camera dry down to 200 ft and below.

What I’ve found to work best for the shooting I do is the Kata GDC Elements cover. For less than $50, this cover keeps out all but the nastiest storms, installs on your camera and lens in just seconds, is easy to shoot with it on, and best of all, is lightweight and takes up very little room in the bag. The Kata E-702 (which I use) fits nearly all SLR and DSLR’s with attached lens up to about 200mm. For longer telephoto lenses, I recommend using the optional extension sleeve to protect your lens.

As extra insurance, I always keep a small trash bag with me in a small pocket in my gear bag. This way I can put it over my backpack, shoulder pack, or whatever bag i am shooting out of that day if the rain really starts coming down..

So don’t let the weather stop you, get out there and shoot!

Stumble it!
