Oh.My.god. That is a beautiful picture. Wow. I love lighthouses. How breathtaking!

Thanks for visiting my blog, btw. I love yours!

  • Joyful Days // Feb 21, 2007 at 12:43 am

That is just such a beautiful picture. Wow!

  • Raggedy // Feb 21, 2007 at 12:48 am

    OMG that is fabulous!
    Great shot!
    My WW is up.
    Happy WW!

  • amy // Feb 21, 2007 at 1:02 am

I can almost hear that wave splashing..awesome job

  • Ryan // Feb 21, 2007 at 1:13 am

Kelli - thank you so much! This is the Grand Haven pier and Lake Michigan.

Joyful Days - :] Much appreciated.

Raggedy - Thank you very very much. I really do appreciate it.

Hi Amy! Yes, I could hear it too!! The wave hit me, nearly wiped me off the pier into the Freezing cold water, and actually ruined my camera in this shot. Luckily my film survived. :)
Thank you as always for stopping by!

    Ryan

  • Purejoy // Feb 21, 2007 at 1:23 am

That is so neat! I love the reflection of the lighthouse! Maybe I should live by the sea one day?

  • Lisa // Feb 21, 2007 at 1:27 am

Seriously—this is AWESOME! It should be in a magazine or something–or hung up on someone’s wall! Great shot of the GH Pier! :)

  • stefanie // Feb 21, 2007 at 1:27 am

Beautiful shot although it must have been freezing to take!

  • Ryan // Feb 21, 2007 at 1:32 am

Hi Lisa - thank you for the kind words. I’m flattered.

Hey Stefanie - Yes, it was SERIOUSLY freezing. My buddy Kevin and I went out onto the pier in the middle of a horrible blizzard. I was standing half-way out toward the center when I took this. As the wave to the right hit, I slid over, grabbed the center steel structure, and hung on for dear life. The wave came completely over the pier, and me, and nearly washed me in. Was actually a bit scary.. but fun. :]

  • Ryan // Feb 21, 2007 at 1:33 am

Purejoy - Thank you very much!

  • YellowRose // Feb 21, 2007 at 1:54 am

Absolutely amazing photo!! And from reading your comments, you are a true photographer, anything for a great photo!! It worked!

    Happy WW, mine’s up!

  • Rory // Feb 21, 2007 at 1:55 am

Another beauty, Ryan. That’s a curiously crazy mix to get the snow and the sea together like that.

And, I’m really enjoying the comments, seeing you add a little background detail to the pictures. I must go back to some of your other photos and see if you’ve done the same…

  • Ryan // Feb 21, 2007 at 2:00 am

Hi YellowRose - Yes, anything for the shot - including a water-soaked camera that I could no longer use, or standing right at the edge of a waterfall during winter!! Not too bright perhaps, but I guess my life is just a series of calculated risks.. Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and comment!

Rory!!! Hope you are well. Yes, I try to always give a bit of information about my images. If you are ever curious abut something regarding any of my photos, always feel free to ask. Thank you for visiting. I always look forward to your comments.

  • Kai // Feb 21, 2007 at 2:03 am

I think you have an unfair WW advantage in the photography department ;-)

Seriously though - amazing shot - I can feel the frosty air hitting my face.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  • Ryan // Feb 21, 2007 at 2:05 am

Hey Kai, I would not say “unfair”… ;)

  • waspgoddess // Feb 21, 2007 at 5:10 am

Stunning. It’s almost black and white, and then there is the amazing red lighthouse.

I can really feel how COLD it must have been.

This was one of my favourites from the screen saver and i was dying to know where it was.
You have my nephews approval, he likes it.
I have corrected my WW, it was meant to be a before and after shot.

    Happy WW!

  • celfyddydau // Feb 21, 2007 at 8:25 am

That is simply gorgeous and should be on the cover of several travel magazines.

My WW is up… but I’m horrible at taking pictures so don’t look if you don’t feel like cringing.

Beckie - Thanks so much. And happy Wednesday to you as well.

Claire - Hope you are well, and thank you for the kind words. So happy to hear you are enjoying my screensaver. :)

Bobbie - Thank you, Happy WW to you too!!!!! Thank you so much for stopping by..

Celfyddydau - Yes, I’m glad I survived too! Actually this is Lake Michigan, so no saltwater.. :]

Karen - Thanks!!! That “crashing wave” actually about had me swimming!! lol

// - Not sure who you are since for some reason your name didn’t show up, but didn’t want you to feel left out here with my responses. :] Thank you. Yes, Michigan. Grand Haven, MI. And funny you say “angry” as the actual title of the photo is “Angry Sea” (although it is not a “Sea” in reality. Thanks!!!

Mags - Gave me chills too!!! Anything for the shot.. Thank you.

    Mar - :] Thank you!!

Holly Schwendiman - I am truly quite flattered. Thank you so much.

Chris - thank you and happy WW to ya!

  • Ryan // Feb 21, 2007 at 3:44 pm

Vicky - Not sure if its “Magazine Cover Quality”, but thank you for such a nice compliment. I really appreciate it.

Fantastic Five - Thank You!!! :]

Busy - This was very much exactly how the photo was taken. I know that I boosted the contrast a little bit, also added a curve adjustment layer, slight sharpening (via unsharp mask), crop, very slight desaturation, cooling filter. Sounds like a lot I suppose, but the adjustments were very slight tweaks as I always try to take it as close as i can and try not to rely on post-editing. Thank you for your interest, and for the nice comment.

Diane - Ha. yes, braving the cold would be an understatement!! Was very very cold, and the 40+ mph winds just made it miserable!! Thank you so much.

Antonette - Thank you very much. I appreciate you taking the time to comment!

Hoyeya - Thank you, and its my pleasure.. :]

  • yoshi // Feb 21, 2007 at 5:02 pm

Very nice shot. I’ve been wanting to go out and do lighthouse shots. You’d think after all the places I’ve been I’d have started that already.

This just goes to show how crazy photographers are to get that one great shot.

  • Ryan // Feb 21, 2007 at 5:28 pm

hey Yoshi. Yes, of the many things I’ve been called, crazy is right up there towards the top on the list..

    Thanks for stopping by!

  • Robin // Feb 21, 2007 at 11:18 pm

Hi, Ryan. I knew this was in Michigan, but couldn’t figure out if it was Grand Haven or Ludington. I’ve been to both. What a wonderful scene you captured! And thanks for stopping by. My photo was taken on the opposite shore…Lake Huron, Oscoda, Michigan, last summer. Your photography is wonderful. I always enjoy visiting to see what daring photos you’ll be posting next. Take care, and Happy Wednesday!
